Three fall maintenance tips for homeowners

Fall home maintenance tips

Fall just arrived, but as we hardy Midwesterners know, it’s never too early to prep for the cold of winter. Be sure to complete the three tasks below as soon as possible, to ensure you’re ready for the snowy months.

Check your heater

First, hire an inspector to check your heating system, so you know you can turn it on when the time comes. It may also be a good time to consider a programmable thermostat. While the upfront cost may dissuade you, this device can significantly cut down your winter energy costs.

Clean out fireplace and chimney

Birds, squirrels and other critters love to make your chimney home, so be sure to sweep for debris and nests. If you never cleaned out your chimney after last winter, you may see soot and creosote (a highly flammable byproduct of burning wood) that should be removed from the sides of your chimney once 1/8 inch of creosote builds up on the walls.

Gut your gutters

As the leaves fall, it’s important to clear your gutters and downspouts. Not only can your foundation and roofing be affected in the fall from leaf buildup, blocked gutters can also lead to ice dams and other issues with winter snow and ice.
