Key insights
- Pantone’s Color of the Year is Ultra Violet
- There are simple ways to incorporate the shade into your décor
- Homeownership means decorating to your heart’s content
Each year, Pantone – the standard language for color – releases its Color of the Year, and recently, they revealed the color for 2018: Ultra Violet. The shade is selected by experts at Pantone who choose the color based on cultural trends and sentiments. In 2016, they chose two colors blending together as a show of peace and unity.
This year’s selection symbolizes “counterculture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance,” a la Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, who all embraced shades of violet.
Expect to see shades of this violet color —which some might insist is different from purple— popping up in everything from new shades of nail polish to trendy home décor pieces.
If you love Ultra Violet, we’ve pulled together some ideas to help you incorporate this fun and slightly rebellious shade into your home.
Flowers
Because many flowers already come naturally in shades of violet, it’s an easy way to bring the color into your home, especially in spring and summer months when you can grow your own. Some varieties to consider include purple lilac, iris, purple pansy and, of course, violets.
Accessories
You can easily liven up a room with accessories like lamps or lampshades, mirror frames, pillows, throw blankets, rugs, books or candles. The great thing about changing up accessories is that it is not very expensive, especially if you can upcycle something you already own.
Paint
If you’re feeling brave enough to paint this bold shade on your walls, you can go big and bold, or you can keep it subtle. Architectural Digest suggests softening the color with other purples, pinks and blues, or embracing the moody feel with deep and dark complementary colors and textures.
If you’re considering putting your home up for sale, you may want to hold off on the paint roller until you get to your new home. Neutral walls help keep potential buyers from getting distracted or turned off.
